Mini Reviews

I’ve been reading a lot lately and don’t have much time to write up full reviews for everything so here are a few mini reviews to tell you about some awesome books I’ve been reading

1. Out of Sight, Out of Time by Ally Carter

Ally Carter never disappoints with her Gallagher Girl books. This book was awesome and very different from the previous 4 books.

Cammie Morgan has lost her memories… memories that might help her uncover why the Circle is after her, what happened to her missing father and where she’s spent her entire summer. Cammie, her friends and her boyfriend set off on another mission to discover all of these things.

When I read the 4th book I wasn’t certain there would be anymore and I was so excited to read this one. The way it ended pretty much guaranteed that there would at least be one more book. Woohoo.

If you haven’t read the first 4 books I highly recommend them! They are just as much fun for 12 year olds as 32 year olds.

2. Smart Girls Get What They Want by Sarah Strohmeyer

I loved that the smart girls were cute, fashionable, relatable girls. This book doesn’t have anyone sacrificing a part of themselves to be liked. Instead each girl is taking command of their lives and trying to participate in something that they feel will make their high school years more complete.

It was a great, fun read and I definitely look forward to any other YA books Stohmeyer writes.

3. I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

Another hit from Sophie Kinsella. I was introduced to this author by the Shopaholic Series and have enjoyed every books I’ve read by her so far. I’ve even read a few of the books she has written under her real name Madeline Wickham and liked those as well. If you are looking for serious works of literature, this is not the place to start. If you are looking for great rom-com reads with likeable characters and fun plots with a few twists then this is the place to look.

Poppy is about to married, when tragedy strikes. Her engagement ring (which also happens to be a priceless family heirloom from her fiance’s family) and her cell phone are both gone within seconds of each other. She happens upon a phone in a rubbish bin and decides to use it so that anyone who might find her ring can contact her. What she doesn’t know is that this phone belongs to a very busy business man’s personal assistant and he wants it back. They (kind of) agree to share the phone. What starts out as a way for both of them to get what they want, ends up opening both of their eyes to secrets about themselves and the people they care about.

It is romantic comedy and therefore most of us can guess how it will all end, but the best part about “I’ve Got Your Number”, and all Kinsella books, is the journey the characters take to get to the happy ending.

4. For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund

Yes, this is technically one of those dystopian books and we are seeing a lot of those right now (thanks Hunger Games), but it was so different from all the other dystopian plots I’ve come across so far. People aren’t living in tents or fighting off zombies. The world is harsh, but not cruel in nature. And big life changing things are happening.

The main character Elliot (who is female, not male) is on the edge of this change. She sees the good in change, but fears the dangers of it all as well. She knows that the status quo will not be maintained for long, but worries that the people will slip back into a dangerous pattern that caused the “end of the world” as her ancestors knew it.

This book was stunning. The characters, setting and story all felt so real and I became totally absorbed. I’ve always loved dystopian stories, but this one was so unique and rather thought-provoking. Although inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion, I felt as though I was reading a truly original book. Jane would definitely be proud of being associated with such a great book.
